Freddie Aguilar Disses Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda

02-02-2009-ifestylefoto1What’s worse than sour forgotten musicians? Artsy-fartsy nationalistic forgotten musicians. Sour prune, Freddie Aguilar, is at it again, casting his opinions on international sensation Charice Pempengco and Journey frontman Arnel Pineda, saying that they achieved fame by singing foreign songs when they should be singing Filipino compositions. That’s what Ka Freddie did years ago ang look where he’s at right now, out of the music scene for more than two decades, doing shows at God knows where, singing the same songs people had already forgotten years ago. You’d probably hear them on the radio if you tune into AM.

arnel-pinedacharice-pempengcoI’m not a Charice or Arnel fan but I admit that these artists are talented. Honestly, I don’t like Charice because she doesn’t look like a star to me but she has a very powerful voice. Arnel, like Charice, just got lucky somebody uploaded his videos on Youtube but he can really bring it. I just thought there might be somebody else out there better than him, I know there is, his videos were just at the right place at the right time. Nevertheless, they took advantage of their opportunities and look at where they are now.

880312326mKa Freddie also did a number on Andrew E years ago, saying that his songs were senseless and sends inappropriate messages to his audience. He was right, but Andrew evolved and is now, taking after Francis M, one of the premiere music producers in the country, helping out the hiphop community but also stretching his boundaries to other music genres.

If this was a desperate attempt to make a comeback, I say it’s just pathetic. Freddie Aguilar’s music has long since passed and unless he accepts that the digital age is here, a comeback would be as possible as Voctor Wood becoming president of the Philippines.

  1. Knowing Freddie, his son Jeriko and the Band personally, and (I must confess) being an admirer of Freddie Aguilar for many years, I hardly think his brilliance as a Musician and as a Performer is dated.

His songs in English and Tagalog are an icon and a wonderful representation of all that is Filipino.

The fact he can generate so much publicity for a comment, controversial or otherwise, just show he is hardly dated, but very much a contemporary.

His current mission to assist in the current calamity by performing at Ka Freddies in Adriatico near Pedro Gil speaks of his humanitarianism and patriotism for the Philippines.

Freddie is an `International’ and commands a handsome fee in the USA and Australia.

I would like him to come over and perform but thus far, my kayabigans have baulked at his fees. Regardless he is sitting pretty and can afford to be a bit pricey and controversial if he wishes to be.

    Bravo Freddie.

      Geoffrey from Sydney

…he may represent you as a Filipino…but he does not represent me…

…his comments were unfounded… his trying to say that charice and Arnel are selling their pinoy pride by singing foreign songs….well, maybe Freddy should donate his money to keep such talents in Philippines…

how about you…why are you in Sydney and not in the Philippines helping Freddy with keeping shit patriotic…

it is people like Freddy and people like you that support such ignorance that makes me realize the bad parts of being a pinoy..

  2. Caloy says:

Freddie is just ignorant, uninformed and very jealous. Freddie Aguilar should be ashamed of himself. Can you imagine if suddenly Oprah invites him to come to the US to sing an English song in her show? He’ll fly on the fastest jet to the US.
How can you force someone to sing Tagalog when the listeners and consumers can only understand English? And Boy Abunda? How can he say that Tagalog songs should be mixed with English sings in a CD? I would not buy such CD. If I am in the mood of listening to Tagalog then I will play one that is all Tagalog.

  3. [...] Lot of Ka Freddie Readers I really didn’t think that my post last July, Freddie Aguilar Disses Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda, would be one of the most read entries in my blog. A lot of people was enraged by his comments and [...]

Hindi mo nakuha ang point. That “artsy farsty” musician you criticize has been emulated by others. His song has been translated in many countries and his “Anak” has sold more than 30 million copies.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Freddie has been imitated. Charice still has no songs of her own. She still sings the same old songs made popular by Whitney, Celine, and Jojo. Arnel has to be content with a high paying gig imitating Steve Perry.

  5. jimmy says:

Freddy paints him self as someone patriotic?! how unpatriotic is it when you disrespect other rising Filipino stars?

    crab mentality….

what ‘s with Freddie and his family? wanna be hero’s for the country….

I like his songs but this guy is showing his true colors when he does this…

btw your nephew Ivler’s a poser!… ranger my ass..

  6. The crab mentality is alive and well and it isn’t Freddie Aguilar. Squeak all you like dear correspondents, Freddie has nothing to prove and has made his fortune from his raw talent and obvious international appeal. When you all bite at his every utterance, you just remind him of what a large following of admirers he has – you know the old saying; “Love me or loath me but you can’t be indifferent to me”. :)

  7. choly cabanban says:

LOSER!
